alpine beauty

today the olds and I relished the peace of a Sunday and headed out to Banff to do some hiking. Our destination point? Sunshine Meadows.. better known as the Sunshine ski resort sans la snow (with it being summer and all..).

During the summer you can hike around the area that, in winter time, is packed with ski bums. It was almost surreal at times looking up at the mountains realizing that I have cut many lines down those slopes. I think my first time skiing there was when I was 6, and since I had some sense knocked into me and began snowboarding I've been there at least 50 times. It is what I like to call my "home resort" the place I know well enough to actually dare step outside the resort boundaries into back country. So, to see it from a completely different perspective was seriously strange.

Contrary to its name "Sunshine" is notorious for crap weather. It lays at ~7500 feet which means damn good snow but not the best conditions. The lighting is often completely flat, all you see is white, you can't tell when there are bumps and ridges ahead of you. It makes for an adventure and some memorable wipeouts (my first time being rescued by ski patrol was at this very place). So, today, I was not surprised to see the weather was likely not going to cooperate. Well, in all fairness it was fine, but not great. I have always loved "lazy" Sundays...

Anyways, here are some pics from along the way.

Were you subtly making fun of skiing in this little statement of yours? I have never snowboarded... and I'm not so sure that I appreciate your negativity towards those of us who have only skied. By the way, I am also rather disappointed that I never got to go on this hike with your family. I will slowly, but surely, get over it. I will now go eat a whole box of ice cream.

Oh the war of skiiers vs. boarders. It is long, it is hard, it is brutal.. The skiiers are SO obviously wrong.. But let's not get into that til at least december..

And like my mom said to you on the phone, there's always next year, or the year after.. My parents are addicted to this hike. Your day will come.
