If anyone can answer this question sounding as if they know what they're talking about I'll be impressed (it was hard enough to write this without confusing myself, so good luck deciphering my words)...
What makes us love?
What a strange emotion. It's the basis of life in my opinion. Love is what we live for. To be loved by our family and friends, to find a partner and be loved by that person, to give love back to those people. We all hope to love our job, our car, and other everyday things. Psychology tells us that we need this emotion in our lives; one without it is lacking something vital.
Also, whatever love is, whether it be looked at as a chemical within the body or something that comes to us from a higher power, is not just straight-forward love. There are so many different kinds. For example, I love my ritual morning vanilla non-fat latte in a very different way than I love my family - but I do love them both.
Admittedly, loving a coffee seems odd, but it makes me happy and I look forward to it, I would miss it if it were not there. So, is this love? Every time a song comes on that provokes a happy feeling within me I say out loud "oh, I love this song" (those who have spent time with me in a car will no doubt validate this point). What makes me love songs?
We can love different things; people (partners), objects (a favorite t-shirt) or events (Christmas), but we can love each of these things on different levels. Everyone has the article of clothing that gets picked first after laundry day, most people have been in love more than once in their lives, why is the feeling different each time?
I know these are questions that humans don't know the answer to, but isn't it a strange thought once you really think about it? Love is everywhere, we come across it many times during a day, it's a feeling that most of us take for granted, yet we know nothing about HOW it actually works.
I decided to see what words the dictionary gathered together to explain love.. This is what I found:
A deep, tender, ineffable feeling of affection and solicitude toward a person, such as that arising from kinship, recognition of attractive qualities, or a sense of underlying oneness.
...So does this mean I, in fact, do not love my morning latte? What about a pet? Try convincing my brother he doesn't love his dog because she is not a person.
Side rant: I have to disagree with it being "a sense of underlying oneness". We are all individuals, when you love someone or something you are not "one" with it, you are TWO, maybe you intertwine in ways, but in no way are you ever "one" with someone else..
Hmmm, I will continue to ponder. It is an interesting thought though, don't you think?

I love you.
This post definitely reflects the fact that you're a psych major. I think love is one of those things that can't be defined by a dictionary and that it's different in every situation--things you sort of said. You mentioned, for example, the fact that it feels different everytime people fall in love and that there are different kids of love (love for dogs, love for shirts, love for non-fat vanilla lattes...). I think love is an emotion that is unexplainable, overwhelming, and it is something that often takes complete control of people--usually for the better but sometimes not. It is not a rational feeling... it is absolutely ridiculous. It definitely makes life a lot more meaningful.
"The heart has its reasons which reason knows not of."
Two different scenarios, one emotion:
staying in an abusive relationship..
not being able to wipe the shit-eating grin off your face..
How can you go from one extreme to the other and everywhere in between with one emotion?
puke.
Heather dear.. this is not supposed to be puke envoking. Merely some food for thought.
Er...what I meant to say was....Love is a funny thing. It can take you from extreme highs to extreme lows and can be the worst and the best thing that ever happened to you. In my opinion, it is better to have loved and been loved than nothing at all.
I don't believe your heart ever falls out of love with someone you truly loved, and that it is possible to have more than one love in your lifetime - I believe there are different places in our hearts for different people who brought out certain aspects of our love - which can manifest itself in many different ways.
No two loves are alike, nor should they be.
But there will always be one love that was the biggest love of your life and...I happen to be marrying him. He's my best friend and he drives me insane and no one else can piss me off so much or make me feel as loved and glorious as he does.
Ah love - you double edged sword you.
You must understand
That the touch of your hand
Makes my pulse react
That it`s only the thrill
Of boy meeting girl
Opposites attract
It`s physical
Only logical
You must try to ignore
That it means more than that
Oh whats love got to do, got to do with it
What`s love but a second hand emotion
What`s love got to do, got to do with it
Who needs a heart
When a heart can be broken
It may seem to you
That i`m acting confused
When you`re close to me
If i tend to look dazed
I`ve read it someplace
I`ve got cause to be
There`s a name for it
There`s a phrase that fits
But whatever the reason
You do it for me
I`ve been thinking of a new direction
But i have to say
I`ve been thinking about my own protection
It scares me to feel this way
What`s love got to do, got to do with it
What`s love but a sweet old fashioned notion
What`s love got to do, got to do with it
Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken
I'd like to dedicate this to all you lovers out there..
Children behave
That’s what they say when we’re together
And watch how you play
They don’t understand
And so we’re
Running just as fast as we can
Holdin’ on to one another’s hand
Tryin’ to get away into the night
And then you put your arms around me
And we tumble to the ground
And then you say
I think we’re alone now
There doesn’t seem to be anyone around
I think we’re alone now
The beating of our hearts is the only sound
Look at the way
We gotta hide what we’re doin’
’cause what would they say
If they ever knew
And so we’re
I think we’re alone now
There doesn’t seem to be anyone around
I think we’re alone now
The beating of our hearts is the only sound
my favorite love song is 'let's get physical' by olivia newton john.
